Radiation Safety
Radioactive materials (RAM) and radiation producing equipment is commonly used in a wide variety of research.
- Radioactive materials in the District of Columbia are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) who provides institutions with licenses to work with RAM.
- Virginia is an agreement state with the NRC and has their own regulations for RAM.
According to our licenses any person wishing to use RAM or the irradiator at GW must be authorized by the appropriate internal procedures before any use can occur. This includes registration of protocols with the Radiation Safety Committee, completion of training and exam and required documentation logs of use.
